Moving Past Perfect: 4 Reasons to Let Go of Perfectionism

Are you putting off trying something new or taking a step towards your dreams?

Maybe you would like to write an online program, launch a new business, start running or writing a book? However, something is stopping you from taking that first step?

I wonder if what is stopping you has anything to do with fear of failure or trying to be perfect?

If so, I hope the following 4 Reasons to Let Go of Perfectionism can help you!

Moving Past Perfect: 4 Reasons to Let Go of Perfectionism

  1. You Are Worthy – yes, you may be imperfect (we all are), however you are worthy of belonging, connection, love. Dr Brené Brown says it so well “You are imperfect, you are wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.”
  2. We are Continually Changing – every moment life is changing and we need to focus on what we can control and then consciously choose how we respond to life.  There are some things that we can control and things we cannot. One of the things I have come to realise over the years is that nothing is permanent, except “everything comes and everything goes.”
  3. Life is Not Meant to Be Perfect (and neither are you!) – a few years ago I came across the book Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn, I didn’t really ‘get’ the title at the time, however have a deeper understanding of what it means now after many years of unravelling and letting go of my own stuff (yes that’s technical). We don’t have to wait for all of our ducks to be in a row in order to start something new or live a wholehearted life, we just have to have the courage to take the first step.  Remember “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” ~ Lao Tzu
  4. We Are Here to Grow and Evolve – in every struggle we are given – we can choose to contract or expand. Yes I know life can be extremely challenging sometimes, however the longer we hold on to our challenges or the more we live in the past or future – the greater our suffering. At any moment we can choose to be more responsible for our life and make different choices. If there has been challenging situations in your past, please make sure you be kind to yourself and continually practice self-compassion. If you need some inspiration, feel free to read the butterfly story.

Whether you are wanting to start a new project or getting through your day, I hope these reasons help take the pressure off yourself and encourage you to take the next step.

If you have any other reasons you would like to share, please feel free to share them below or on our Facebook page. What can you practice imperfectly today?
