Owning our Authority – Tanya Geisler

In this TEDTalk (15.45mins), Life Coach Tanya Geisler talks about Owning Our Authority and the space between what we see and what is true.

In the talk Tanya speaks about –

  • High achieving women and the impostor phenomenon and refers to a Maya Angelou quote ~ “I have written eleven books, but each time I think, ‘Uh oh, they’re going to find out now. I’ve run a game on everybody and they’re going to find me out.’”
  • The impostor phenomenon links to thoughts like –
    • “I’m not supposed to be here”
    • “My success is an illusion”
    • “It’s just a matter of time before they find out I’m a fake”
    • “I’m not ready yet”
    • “Someone must have make a mistake”
    • “Who me?”
    • “I’m not good enough”
  • The ego wants to want more than it wants to get.
  • Tanya’s 10 steps from Impostor to Authority (they are not linear) are –
    1. Decide to Strive
    2. Beratement Bootcamp – all the reasons why you’ll never be an authority. All the reasons why you will never be an authority. Notice the extremes that come out. Either or thinking.. What is real and what is imagined. Know the red herrings that are keeping you stuck.
    3. Bolster your authority thesis – know your victories, deals, sealed evidence, credentials, experience, social proof, launched, written, inspired, created, sold, pulled off, nailed, delivered, given etc.
    4. Call in the reserves – the people in your life want you to succeed. Allow them to champion YOU! You’ve got this. Release the people in your life who contribute to your insecurities.
    5. Jump – “After you jump, before you land is God.” ~ Gabrielle Roth – cross, jump, dive, catapult, fail, step, fling, be pushed, tipped. Find Your Way – across the ditch is your desire.
    6. Do the work – Stephen Pressfield ~ “Do the Work, Do the Work, Do the Work.”
    7. Allow – Malcolm Gladwell talks about 10000 hours to master a skill – maybe it’s 10000 choices?
    8. Choice to Quit or Choose to Stay – “We know intuitively that we should not run, we should stay around and look for a different way forward,… but we are wiser, more present, more mature and more understanding when we realize we can never flee from the need to run away.” ~ David Whyte.
    9. Look up at your markers.
    10. Celebrate – feel the light and celebrate.
