Research Related to Health and Wellbeing

Many people have done research in relation to health and wellbeing across the world. We have gathered some of this research related to health and wellbeing below –

The Centre for Emotional Health at Macquarie University (2012) study on What Worries Australians, found the top five worries for males and females in Australia were –

  1. My Future Career
  2. My Achievements and The Future (tied)
  3. What other people thought of me
  4. Doing well at work or school.

The Australia Psychological Society commissioned a study on stress and wellbeing in Australia (2011) and found:

  • 12% of Australians experience stress in the severe range
  • 30% of people identified the workplace as a source of stress
  • one in four Australians experienced anxiety
  • the most effective way of managing stress was spending time with friends, watching TV and listening to music.

In Australia’s Health (2010), the following statistics were identified:

  • Risk factors contribute to over 30% of Australia’s total burden of death, disease and disability.
  • Tobacco smoking is the single most preventable cause of ill health and death in Australia (rates continue to fall though).
  • Three in 5 adults (61%) were either overweight or obese in 2007–08.
  • One in 4 children (25%) aged 5–17 years were overweight or obese in 2007–08.
  • Of Australians aged 15–74 years in 2006–2007, less than half (41%) had an adequate or better level of health literacy.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing (2007) found:

  • Of the 16 million Australians aged 16-85 years, almost half (45% or 7.3 million) had a lifetime mental disorder (i.e. a mental disorder at some point in their life).
  • One in five (20% or 3.2 million) Australians had a 12-month mental disorder. There were also 4.1 million people who had experienced a lifetime mental disorder but did not have symptoms in the 12 months prior to the survey interview.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2007 Survey of Employment Arrangements, Retirement and Superannuation –

  • 34.9 % males and 42.4% females over 15 are always or often rushed for time, and
  • 16.3% males and 14.6% females feel work and family balance are rarely or never in balance.
