Transforming the Arena – Athlete Transition Coaching

lete Transition Coaching at Sport Life Flow supports athletes to plan and manage their life beyond elite sport with clarity, confidence, compassion and connection.

The International Coach Federation (ICF) refers to coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” Coaching recognises the client as the expert in their own world (life and work) and knows every person is creative, resourceful, and whole.

Transition coaching is a creative process of discovery where you and your transition coach come together to help clarify your intentions and set you on the path to finding true career and life alignment. Transition coaches provide a supportive, neutral, and productive coaching relationship to help you maximise your potential in both a professional and personal capacity, while holding you accountable. A transition coach can partner with you if you want to excel in your current career, or if you are seeking out a new career choice.

Athletes – both currently competing and those moving towards the end of their career can benefit from Transition Coaching. Maybe you are interested in finding a new direction, developing leadership skills or receiving support and guidance through a career transition will all benefit from engaging with a transition coach.

One-to-one transition coaching sessions are conducted on Zoom.

According to William Bridges in his book Managing Transitions: Making the Most of Changetransitions are psychological and have a 3 phase process (see below), whereas change is situational. In his books Transitions: Making Sense of Life’s Changes and Managing Transitions: Making the Most of Change, he talks about the process of transition having three phases –

  1. an ending (letting go of a situation);
  2. a neutral zone (the confusing or distressing area of in-betweenness), and
  3. a new beginning (launching in to a new situation).
Different Types of Transitions

There are many transitions in life and some of them can be bigger transitions than others. However, it also depends on how we look at them. For example – leaving a career can be more challenging than driving home each day from work (which is also a transition), however even this example can depend on a variety of variables.

Following are some examples of what could be perceived as bigger transitions that occur in life, however please remember many activities in life can be a transition –

  • leaving a career voluntarily or getting injured,
  • being separated or divorced,
  • getting married or starting a relationship,
  • starting a new career or position,
  • retiring from your career.

The Athlete Transition Coaching Process at Sport Life Flow supports athletes to plan and manage their life beyond elite sport with clarity, confidence, compassion and connection.

As a former professional tennis player (my best performance was reaching 3rd Round of Australian Open Single event in 1994) and also certified High Performance Coach with Tennis Australia, this topic is close to my heart.

I wish I had the skills and knowledge I have now on mental health and wellbeing when I was playing tennis. However, in saying that, I now know that is why I have this experience – to share with other athletes and coaches.

Being able to know yourself outside of elite sport and manage your life effectively is just as important as the technical, tactical, mental and physical side within sport. At Sport Life Flow we support you to wholistically look at your life, so you can make your transition outside of sport with greater ease.

Based On Research…

Our Athlete Transition Coaching Process is based on research and is designed with the athlete so they can plan and manage their life beyond elite sport whilst they are still competing and / or also moving towards the end of their career.

Specifically it is for the athlete who is –

  • ready to start the process of seeing how their sporting skills translate in to their life beyond elite sport,
  • wants to discover how they are are more than their sports identify and their self-worth is non-negotiable (not based on their sporting achievements),
  • finds oneself being overly critical and wants to learn to be kinder to themselves,
  • have tried lots of ways to manage stress and are ready to look at other ways to cope and enhance resilience,
  • wants to discover other skills to manage injuries and pressure within sport,
  • build a grounded sense of self-confidence and self-worth, and
  • wants to keep growing and learning.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

and

“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy – the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” ~ Brené Brown

The coaching and mentoring model I use when working with clients draws from the latest evidence-based coaching and educational research, intuitive eating, cognitive behavioural, self-compassion and mindfulness-based tools and techniques, which (simply) look at the connection between thoughts, emotions, and actions. The intention is to support you to discover proactive ways to solve challenges and untangle from unhelpful thinking and behaviour.

At Sport Life Flow, our “Transforming the Arena” Athlete Transition Coaching Program is catered to the needs and requirements of the athlete or athlete and coach. The process is outlined below –

We are here to provide you with the most supportive, evidence-based and effective Athlete Transition Coaching as possible, so please let us know what you are after. Depending on where you reside, our program is conducted over Zoom.

About Jane – the Coach

Jane Taylor (M.EdSt) is a former Professional Athlete, Registered P-12 Teacher (since 2002), High Performance Coach with Tennis Australia and ICF PCC Coach who is committed to supporting people change the way they see themselves and helping by “(Un)Learning, so You Can Reconnect and Engage With Your Innate Potential and BE Whole-Heartedly YOU… One Habit at a Time!”, so we can connect with life authentically and live in peace and harmony. She is a Trained Teacher in Mindful Self-Compassion and has been practising mindfulness since 2008.

Jane has been lucky enough to work and support over 31500 adults in leadership, coaching, education, emotional intelligence, mindfulness meditation, self-compassion, mental health promotion and prevention and organisational wellbeing and many thousands of students and young people within sport and education.

Since retiring as a Professional athlete, going to university to become a health and physical education teacher, working in a National Mental Health and Wellbeing initiative and then starting the adventure of mindfulness in 2008 and later self-compassion, I have had a number of athletes (past and present), parents and coaches ask me about the tools I use with clients and the ones I know that would have been beneficial growing up in elite and then professional sport. So I decided to create the “Adolescent Athlete’s Well-Being Toolkit” after years of learning or maybe it is better said unlearning using the tools of mindfulness and self-compassion. This is the toolkit I wish I had as a professional athlete.
