Ready to shake up your practice of gratitude? Maybe it’s time to include a gratitude jar as one of your Habits for Wellbeing?

I have been practising gratitude for many years (writing gratitude lists in my journal, saying thank you  and sending cards). I will continue to do those practices, but this year I wanted to change it up a bit and add an end-on-year ritual, so I can finish close the year with more gratitude. So, this year, I have decided to add a gratitude jar to my habits for wellbeing.

I heard about this idea a few years ago on Facebook and shared it here, however as I was already implementing other gratitude practices, I didn’t implement it. This year is different!


What is a Gratitude Jar you might ask?

A gratitude jar is basically a jar full of gratitude! I have also heard it called a joy jar, a moments jar, a happiness jar or a good times jar.

Every time you feel and/or experience gratitude in the year, write it on a sheet of paper and put it in your gratitude jar. Then at the end of the year on December 31, you get to open the gratitude jar and read about the beautiful experiences and people  you were grateful for in the year.

Great – follow these simple steps –

  1. Find a jar you would like to use
  2. Label your jar – Gratitude
  3. Gather a pen and paper and put it near your jar
  4. That’s it – you are ready to go! You can fill your gratitude jar each day…

What are Some Ideas to Include in Your Gratitude Jar?

It is totally up to you, however the focus is on what and who you are grateful or happy for. The following sentence starters and ideas may help –

  • today I am grateful for…
  • … helped me so much today
  • my life is great because …
  • I am happy today …
  • … makes me smile
  • I love …
  • today I gave …
  • today I received …
  • today I was reminded about …
  • thanks to … for …

Whatever it is, write it down, put a date on it, and then put it in your jar! Then watch the changes that happen each day as you cultivate the habit of gratitude in your life. Not convinced and need some science on gratitude? Click here.
