Why Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional intelligence is what we use when we have authentic, open and honest conversations with our coworkers, effectively work with customers and staff in business, empathise with our spouse or significant other, perform under pressure and support a challenging or distraught child / student. It allows us to understand ourselves better, build connections and relationships with others and live a more authentic, healthy, and happy life.
The World Economic Forum indicated that emotional intelligence will be in the top 10 required skills individuals require to thrive by 2020. There are many other reasons, both professional and personally, of why emotional intelligence is important, including -
- being able to better adapt to and cope with change,
- building high performing teams,
- increased employee engagement,
- having a clearer vision and building a great culture,
- executing performance effectively and efficiently, and
- developing trust and empathy within relationships.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
he scientific definition of emotional intelligence comes from Drs. John Mayer, Peter Salovey, and David Caruso:
"Emotional intelligence refers to an ability to recognize the meanings of emotion and their relationships, and to reason and problem-solve on the basis of them. Emotional intelligence is involved in the capacity to perceive emotions, assimilate emotion-related feelings, understand the information of those emotions, and manage them."
Emotional Intelligence is a set of competencies that allow people to apply thinking and feeling to make optimal decisions. Harvard Business Review says emotional intelligence is "the key to professional success."
What Will You Learn?

How does Simply Emotional Intelligence work?
The Simply Emotional Intelligence Distance-Learning course is about developing awareness and enhancing the skills within emotional intelligence. An outline of the four weeks follows -
Week 1 - Cultivating Self-Awareness Knowledge and Skills
This week our focus is -
- Setting intentions for the 4 weeks,
- What is self-awareness?
- The benefits of self-awareness,
Recognising your own thoughts, feelings and values (and how they influence behaviour),
Knowing your own abilities (i.e. strengths and limitations),
- Developing a growth mindset.
Week 2 - Cultivating Self-Management Knowledge and Skills
This week our focus is -
What is self-management?
The benefits of self-management,
Being able to successfully regulate thoughts, feelings and behaviours,
Effectively managing stress and control impulses, and
Motivating yourself to set and achieve goals (if you choose to).
Week 3 - Cultivating Social-Awareness Knowledge and Skills
This week our focus is -
What is social awareness?
The benefits of social-awareness,
Being able to understand the perspectives of others and empathise with them (including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures), and
Understanding the social and ethical norms for behaviour, and
Recognising family, school, and community resources and supports.
Week 4 - Cultivating Authentic Relationship Knowledge and Skills
This week our focus is -
What are relationship skills?
The benefits of relationship skills,
Communicating clearly by listening well and engaging in the conversations,
Co-operating with others and resisting inappropriate social pressures,
Negotiating conflict constructively, and
Seek and offering help when required.

Why I created Simply Emotional Intelligence...
Hi - I am Jane Taylor - let me share a little bit about why I wrote the Simply Emotional Intelligence course.
Since becoming a registered Health and PE Teacher in 2011, I have been passionate about the personal development, self-awareness and emotional aspects of learning. I could see how applying this information and practising the skills could support people lead a fulfilling and meaningful life. Whilst I was working in a National Mental Health and Wellbeing project, this passion developed and I discovered a number of people were doing this work, so it continued to ignite my passion.
Over the years, I continued to develop my own skills as my own emotional intelligence was a big growth area for me. During this time, I continued to write and develop projects and shared many of resources during that time. Now it is time to share more of this work. Subsequently...
