The Gift and Power of Emotional Courage

Today I had a bit of time and decided to watch the Ted Talk by Susan David the gift and power of emotional courage. I really enjoyed the talk, so wanted to share it with you as it links to my own experiences of emotions.

The Gift and Power of Emotional Courage by Susan David

Susan starts her talk with what does it take in the way we see ourselves – our thoughts, our emotions and our stories that help us thrive in an increasing complex and fraught world?

In this inspirational talk Susan discusses –

  • emotional rigidity versus emotional agility,
  • the destructive impact of living in denial,
  • how her high school teacher changed her life,
  • moving out of denial in to emotional agility,
  • the only certainty is uncertainty,
  • how people judge themselves for having “bad emotions”, like sadness, anger and even grief,
  • how positivity has become a new form of moral correctness and it is cruel, unkind and ineffective,
  • when we push aside normal emotions to embrace false positivity, we lose the capacity to develop the skills to deal with the world as it is not as we wish it to be,
  • discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life,
  • the importance of accurately describing feelings and remembering that emotions are data (not directives),
  • shares the difference between saying “I am….”, and “I am noticing I’m feeling…”,
  • looking at what emotions are telling you and which action will move me towards my values not away from them?
  • emotional agility is the ability to be with your emotions with curiosity, compassion and courage to take values connected steps,
