Find yourself being overly self-critical?

Not feeling quite good enough?

Ready to decrease stress and stop giving yourself such a hard time?

Welcome to the Unlocking Self-Compassion for Professionals 6-Week Online Course

This course has been designed for you to learn the skills we need to meet life’s challenges with greater wisdom, compassion and kindness. The Unlocking Self-Compassion for Professionals will support participants to hold themselves with understanding and compassion when they most need it (i.e. when being challenged at work in relationships, feelings of inadequacy and/or not getting the results you hoped for). Participants will learn key informal self-compassion practices, as well as brief practices in mindfulness right from home. Unlocking Self-Compassion for Professionals is based on the 8-week Mindful Self-Compassion course created by Kriten Neff (PhD) and Christopher Germer (PhD) with permission.

What is Self-Compassion?

Self-compassion can be learned by anyone. It's a courageous attitude that stands up to harm, including the harm that we unwittingly inflict on ourselves through self-criticism, self-isolation, or self-absorption.

Dr Kristin Neff refers to self compassion as having three components -

  1. Self-kindness - being gentle and understanding with ourselves rather than harshly critical and judgmental.
  2. Common humanity - feeling connected with others in the experience of life rather than feeling isolated and alienated by our suffering (i.e. experiencing our imperfections).
  3. Mindfulness - that we hold our experience in balanced awareness, rather than ignoring our pain and exaggerating it.

Self-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience, allowing us to admit our shortcomings, motivate ourselves with kindness, forgive ourselves when needed, relate wholeheartedly to others, and be more authentically ourselves.

Why Self-Compassion?

Rapidly expanding research demonstrates that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional wellbeing, less anxiety, depression and stress, maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise, and satisfying personal relationships.

“If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete." ~ Jack Kornfield

Who is the 6 Week Course for?

The Unlocking Self-Compassion for Professionals Course is useful for a broad range of people with diverse backgrounds, ages, interests and levels of well-being. People self-refer or sometimes are referred by their doctors or psychologists because of physical and emotional stressors in their lives. Many enrol because, although they are feeling well physically, they say the pace of their lives is "out of control" or they are "just not feeling quite right" and want more ease and peace.

Self-compassion can enhance learning, intrinsic motivation, confidence, concentration, creativity and resilience.

For professionals, it can help with personal accountability, taking greater responsibility for past mistakes, a disposition to apologise and greater conscientiousness.

For people interested in their health - self-compassion has been linked to healthier behaviours (i.e. more exercise, safer sex and less alcohol use) as well as healthier body image and eating behaviour (e.g. less body pre-occupation and body shame; fewer weight worries and more intuitive eating).

Self-Compassion has also been linked to less burnout and "compassion" fatigue for caregivers, increased wellbeing for parents of autistic children, more caring and supportive relationships, more forgiveness and perspective taking in relationships as well as more compassion, empathy and altruism for others.

Self-compassion is therapeutic, but it’s not therapy. The emphasis of the course is on enhancing emotional resources to meet emotional challenges, old and new. Unlocking Self-Compassion is also not primarily a type of mindfulness training: Unlocking Self-Compassion is mindfulness-based compassion training in which the quality of warmth is emphasized more than awareness itself.

Unlocking Self-Compassion (USC) is primarily a compassion training program rather than mindfulness training like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), although mindfulness is the foundation of self-compassion. USC is also not psychotherapy insofar as the emphasis of USC is on building emotional resources rather than addressing old wounds. Positive change occurs naturally as we develop the capacity to be with ourselves in a kinder, more compassionate way.

Jane, how did you start teaching Self-Compassion?

I have been committed and practicing mindfulness since my journey started in December 2008, when I attended my first 10-day Vipassana silent mediation retreat (I have completed 3 more 10-day silent retreats since then - December 2009, December 2011 & September 2013). In Term 4, 2009 I attended my first 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course. In August 2011, I attended the seven day Intensive MBSR and MBCT Teacher Training which involved 60 hours of training. Then in January 2012, I attended the Teacher Development Intensive that was run by the Centre for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. This eight-day residential training program/retreat included: 92 hours of direct instruction and comprehensive investigation of the underpinnings of the MBSR curriculum.

Throughout the time I was teaching MBSR, the theme of self-compassion kept on coming up with my clients as well as in my own practice. I learnt as much as I could about it and started practising it in my life. I started to realise self-compassion was not something I learnt much about growing up and became aware of how critical I was of myself.

Then in July 2017 I attended the Mindful Self-Compassion training and left that training with my heart so full and knew this was what I needed to continue to practice. I applied to start the process of becoming a trained MSC teacher with Centre for Mindful Self-Compassion and was accepted in to the 6-Day Teacher Training Program in Auckland (September 2017) and became a trained teacher on June 28, 2019.
