What is Group Coaching?

Recently I started running group coaching online, so today on the journal I wanted to explain more about what group coaching is.

What is Coaching?

The International Coach Federation (ICF) refers to coaching as

“partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

Coaching recognises the client as the expert in their own world (life and work) and knows every person is creative, resourceful, and whole.

Basically the coaching process is about helping the client in identifying where they are now, where they would like to be and then support them in closing that gap. The coach does this through –

  • discovering, clarifying, and aligning with where the client wants to be,
  • encouraging self-discovery and trust within themselves,
  • eliciting client-generated solutions and strategies,
  • keeping the client accountable and ensuring they are taking responsibility for themselves, and
  • providing support to the client.

It is also explained in the following video we created a while back.

So, What is Group Coaching?

Basically group coaching is similar to the above, however you join with a small group of other individuals who’d prefer to learn in a group than individually. The process is as follows –

  • You clarify, decide and identify where you want to be at the end of the group coaching process (i.e. 4 weeks if it is the Whole-Hearted Connection Group Coaching Circle).
  • Each week the coach will help you to discover more about yourself and increase self-trust by helping you identify client-generated solutions and strategies,
  • Within the group coaching, the coach will support the client be accountable to themselves and help them to align their actions to their intentions, goals and / or outcomes.

What Are Some of the Reasons People Come to Group Coaching?

People come to group coaching for a variety of reasons, it depends on where they are in there life. However some examples include, people who are –

  • feeling out of balance and/or harmony in your life and work,
  • going through a transition in life (e.g. changing jobs),
  • ready to increase self-trust and a grounded sense of confidence,
  • facing a stressful issue at work,
  • wanting to uncover your strengths and gifts,
  • needing some support to deal with fear or self-doubt,
  • wanting to increase your self-reliance or self-compassion,
  • feeling overwhelmed or confused with everything you have to do,
  • ready to take better care of yourself and look after your health and wellbeing,
  • wanting to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life,
  • a teacher wanting some individual support that links to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

If any of these sound like you, then group coaching could be for you.
