What You Allow Is What Will Continue

I have just got off the phone to my friend Michelle. She is one of those people that says life how it is (which I totally love and respect about her).

After I finished the conversation, it got me reflecting more about self-respect and what we allow in life. Subsequently, in this post, I am going to explore –

  • What is Respect?
  • What is Self-Respect?
  • What Do You Allow?
  • What You Allow is What Will Continue…

Let’s get started…

What is Respect?

As I researched respect, I discovered the following definitions –

  • “a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements.” ~ Google
  • “esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability.” ~ Dictionary.com
  •  “a feeling of admiring someone or something that is good, valuable, important, etc.” ~ Merriam-Webster Dictionary
  • “a feeling of admiration that you have for someone, because of their personal qualities, their achievements, or their status, and that you show by treating them in a polite way.” ~ Macmillan Dictionary

What is Self-Respect?

Self-respect has some similar elements to respect, however relate to the self. Here are a couple definitions on self-respect –

  • “pride and confidence in oneself; a feeling that one is behaving with honour and dignity.” ~ Google
  • “proper esteem or regard for the dignity of one’s character” ~ Dictionary.com
  • “proper respect for yourself as a human being” ~ Merriam-Webster Dictionary
  • “a feeling of respect for yourself that shows that you value yourself” ~ Cambridge Dictionaries Online.

What do you think about these definitions, is there anything you would add?

I found a couple of quotes that also enhanced my understanding of self-respect –

  1. “They cannot take away our self-respect if we do not give it to them.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi
  2. “I have no right, by anything I do or say, to demean a human being in his own eyes. What matters is not what I think of him; it is what he thinks of himself. To undermine a man’s self-respect is a sin.” ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery
  3. “Respect yourself and others will respect you.” ~ Confucius
  4. “What you think of yourself is much more important than what people think of you.” ~ Unknown
  5. “When you undervalue what you do, the world will undervalue who you are.” ~ Oprah Winfrey
  6. “If you don’t have respect for yourself, you won’t get it anywhere else.” ~ Unknown

What Do You Allow?

After reading about respect and self-respect, is there any thing in your life that you are allowing that you would like to stop?

Maybe there is someone at work who is draining your energy?

Maybe you have some unhealthy eating habits?

Maybe you are doubting yourself and your abilities?

Maybe there is someone who is treating you disrespectfully?

Is there anything in your life that you are allowing and would like to change? If so, what is it?
