How Can I Do a Personal Quarterly Review?

Wow – can you believe it is almost at the end of Quarter 1?

Yep it has been almost 3 months, since we said goodbye to last year in the end-of-year ritual and then created your goals for the first quarter. Remember those? You know the ones – starting to write a book, finishing that course or running a half marathon.

Well, now it is time to do a personal quarterly review and see how you have been tracking with those goals and intentions.

Why Do a Personal Quarterly Review?

For me, one of the main reasons I do a personal quarterly review is to increase awareness. For example – increasing awareness on where my resources (i.e. time, energy, love and money) have been going, identifying any behavioural patterns and making time to celebrate.

Steve Jobs said it so eloquently in his Stanford University Commencement Speech

“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well worn path; and that will make all the difference.”

How Can I Do a Personal Quarterly Review?

Glad you asked! Here are the steps I use. Now please remember as I go through these steps, this is not a linear process, it is dynamic and even those I am writing it in steps, I go backwards and forwards throughout!

Step 1 – Gather Your Materials

What do you use to plan and write your goals / intentions, power word or project plans in? It might be a planner, your booklet from the end-of-year ritual, calendar or self-management system. What ever you use, find it and have it close to you so you can refer back to them. If you do not have anything, then you can start with a clean slate.

You will also need a journal or something to write your reflections in.

Step 2 – Reviewing Quarter 1 (January, February and March)

In your journal, write your responses to the following questions –

  1. Have I honoured my power word in this quarter? If so, how?
  2. Did I honour my intentions? If so, how?
  3. What went really well in the last quester? Who / what helped me do this?
  4. My favourite memories from the last quarter were… The experiences that were really heart-warning for me included…
  5. In the last quarter, the following was challenging for me… My biggest lesson that I learnt / remembered was…
  6. How am I feeling after the past quarter? Am I being the women I want to be?

Step 3 – Evaluating Results of Quarter 1 Goals and Intentions

Through the lens of self-compassion, identify –

  1. Did I accomplish what I set out to do in this past quarter? If so, how? If not, what can I learn from this? Did I simply change the goal / intention, am still completing it or tried and failed?
  2. If I did complete my goal / intentions, did I celebrate the completion of it? If so, how and who with? If, not how can I celebrate now?
  3. Is there anything I need to alter moving forward in to quarter 2 in relation to these goals and intentions?  If so, what is it?

Step 4 – Preparating for Quarter 2 (April, May, June)

  1. What activities / tasks do I need to do in the next 3 months?
  2. What am I really needing in Q2? How do I want to feel? How can I focus on that?
  3. Do I need to recommit to my power word or intentions? If so, how will I do that?
  4. What habit, discipline or action will I continue to practise this quarter? Is there a habit, discipline or action I will stop this quarter? If so, which one? What habit, discipline or action will I start this quarter?

Step 5 – Creating Your Quarter 2 Goal/s

What is a goal that has a deadline and can be “checked” off in the next 90 days? Once you have identified your goal/s they can become your focus for quarter 2.
