Yes YOU – what would you do if you weren’t afraid or fearful?
Just recently I wrote a post on Permission to Love and Permission Granted: Say YES to Yourself. These posts have proved popular with Habits for Wellbeing readers and today I thought I would continue the theme and write a post around fear and ask the question what would you do if you weren’t afraid? Let’s start with fear.
What is Fear?
Maybe you have heard –
- FEAR – False Evidence Appearing Real
- FEAR – Forget Everything And Run or Face Everything And Rise
- “…an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm.” – Google
- “…an emotion induced by a threat perceived by living entities, which causes a change in brain and organ function and ultimately a change in behavior, such as running away, hiding or freezing from traumatic events.” – Wikipedia
- “to be afraid of (something or someone)” or “to expect or worry about (something bad or unpleasant)” – Merriam-Webster Dictionary
- “An unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm.” – Oxford Dictionaries
- “A very unpleasant or disturbing feeling caused by the presence or imminence of danger.” – The Free Dictionary
A few of my favourite quotes on fear also come to mind –
- “Fear is only as deep as the mind allows.” ~ Japanese Proverb
- “Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is.” ~ German Proverb
- “Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, professionals built the Titanic.” ~ Unknown
- “If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” ~ Marcus Aurelius
- “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
- “The enemy is fear. We think it is hate; but, it is fear.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi
- “People living deeply have no fear of death.” ~ Anaïs Nin
- “The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” ~ Nelson Mandela
- “Waiting to develop courage is just another form of procrastination. The most successful people take action while they’re afraid!” ~ Unknown
- “Fear is never a reason for quitting; it is only an excuse.“ ~ Norman Vincent Peale
- And of course Marianne Williamson ~ Dreams.
So, now we are on the same page about fear, What Would You Do if You Weren’t Afraid?
Would you –
- Start that course you want to?
- Write a letter?
- Start writing your book?
- Speak your truth?
- Simplify your life?
- Ask for help?
- Exercise?
- Skydive?
- Love deeply?
- Give unconditionally?
- Make mistakes?
- Commit to yourself?
- Be your true self?
Are you ready to take the next step towards getting clarity and reclaiming your courage and power?
If not, what is your payoff for holding onto fear and not embracing your power? Maybe you can spend some time in reflection with this question?
A few things I have remembered on my journey around untangling my own fear is that –
- “We fear and crave becoming truly ourselves” ~ Abraham Maslow.
- “Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.” ~ A Course in Miracles.
- “Every situation properly perceived, becomes an opportunity to heal.” ~ A Course in Miracles.
- “You are doing this unto yourself. That is your salvation.” ~ A Course in Miracles (this was tough to deal with and I still am challenged by it comes days, but each day I am more and more responsible).
