The Future Letter – A Commitment to Yourself in 2015!

Happy New Year – I trust you have spent some time reflecting and celebrating your accomplishments in 2014? If not, you may like to do that as reflecting and celebrating your year is a great way to let go of the past and transition to living in the present, so you can create your future.

Which moves me on to the future letter. I have used this tool previously in a variety of ways from celebrating an accomplishment to sending myself encouragement after a challenging experience. Today, I am going to talk about it in relation to setting your goals and intentions.

The Future Letter

Imagine waking up on January 1, 2016 and opening a letter… which describes the fun, happy and wonderful experiences you had in 2015?

That is what the future letter is and it is a great exercise for creating your goals and intentions.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Find a sheet of paper and pen.
  2. Date the letter January 1, 2016.
  3. Address the letter to whomever you wish: yourself, your Buddha nature, God, Loving Universe, yourself, Your Higher Self – whomever you please.
  4. Now pretend it is January 1, 2016. You are reflecting back on the year 2015 and giving thanks for the many fun things you did or accomplished. You can even like to divide your letter in to areas of your life – i.e. work, health, relationships.
  5. As you write your letter, let your imagination run free. Joyfully describe writing your first book, running a half marathon, paying off your credit cards or debts, donating time and/or money to your favourite charity – whatever makes your heart sing! The more you can tap in to your feelings and intuition by being specific, the more powerful this activity can be.
  6. As you write down each experience, be as specific as you can and also add dates to them if you would like, but remember to also be flexible!
  7. Finish your letter with “I am so grateful for all of these experiences or something else for my highest good as they are all ecological – good for me, good for others and good for the environment.”
  8. Reread it, add anything extra and then Sign it. Feel the fun and celebration coming from your words!
  9. Now seal it in an envelope…to be opened January 1, 2016.

Adaptations to the Future Letter

Following are some ideas to adapt your future letter –

  • Write your future letter in a card and schedule it to be mailed to yourself towards the end of the year!
  • Write a future letter for 1 month, 3 months or 6 months – whatever time frame works for you.
