Time to Create a Start Doing List?

A little while backI shared with you a little about a “stop doing list.” Today, I wanted to share with you the “start doing” list. Like the stop doing list, I created the “start doing” list many years ago after identifying a number of habits I wanted to start doing to look after my self-care and wholistic wellbeing. Let’s get started…

What is a “Start Doing” List?

As indicated above, I created the list after identifying it was time to look after my own self-care and wholistic wellbeing more. After I identified a range of behaviours that were draining my energy (the stop doing list), I created a list that would nourish and nurture my wholistic Self

Given that each of us only has 24 hours in a day, each choice (short and long-term) and behaviour we have control over, can move us towards our vision of life or move us away. Simply – a “start doing list” is a list of habits, tasks, behaviours, choices or activities that I wanted to start doing going as they were more aligned with true Self.

Some examples of what might was included on my start doing list, included –

  • Cultivating self-compassion,
  • Start taking my supplements consistently,
  • Start paying attention to the flow of money in my life,
  • Paying greater attention to how my body is feeling,
  • Understanding and labelling my emotions, and
  • Saying “no” to things that drain my energy.

Do you think a list like this may be useful for you?

3 Reasons Why You Might Like to Create a “Start Doing” List…

There are many reasons we might need a start doing list and some of these include –

1. You Are Feeling Exhausted or Burnt Out

Yes as the saying goes you cannot give from an empty cup or we can only give what we have. Do you have the energy and vitality you would like or are you feeling exhausted or burnt out. Exhaustion and burnout are real and we do not untangle from them by pushing harder (well I didn’t). Instead we need to relearn to look after ourselves and focus on what matters.

“It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.” — Lou Holtz

2. You Are Watching Other People Create a Life They Love

Don’t worry we can learn from other people, especially if they are inspiring us to make tiny tweaks or transformations in life. So, what lights you up? What do you in-joy doing? Starting with responding to questions life these can help you start to get clear on what inspires you. Then once you know, you can start to take small steps towards creating a life you love.

“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

3. You Know Something is Not Quite in Alignment

Have you noticed over time that some of your behaviours and choices align with your core values and some may not? Remember – this is not about being perfect. However, it is about learning to pivot when situations or experiences are no longer in alignment with who you truly are at a deeper level.

“Developing inner values is much like physical exercise. The more we train our abilities, the stronger they become. The difference is that, unlike the body, when it comes to training the mind, there is no limit to how far we can go.” ~ His Holiness the Dalai Lama

What other reasons can you identify about whether or not to “create a to start list?
