The Power of Vulnerability

Isn’t it interesting how themes in conversations happen? During the past couple of days, I have had several conversations linked to vulnerability. I am not sure why (and it doesn’t really matter), however as I have embodied vulnerability (and not having the answers and knowing I am enough the way I am) the more I feel comfortable in the space of not being able to explain things or having answers – but just being here in the moment if that make sense?

When I first saw this video a couple of years ago (and I have shared it so many times since), I finally felt someone understood me and I will be sharing more later. However, before that happens enjoy The Power of Vulnerability by Brené Brown and I hope it inspires you as much as it did me.

Here are some inspirational quotes on vulnerability –

  1. “I understand now that the vulnerability I’ve always felt is the greatest strength a person can have. You can’t experience life without feeling life. What I’ve learned is that being vulnerable to somebody you love is not a weakness, it’s a strength.” ~ Elisabeth Shue
  2. “Love comes when manipulation stops; when you think more about the other person than about his or her reactions to you. When you dare to reveal yourself fully. When you dare to be vulnerable.” ~ Dr. Joyce Brothers
  3. “We’re never so vulnerable than when we trust someone – but paradoxically, if we cannot trust, neither can we find love or joy” ~ Walter Anderson
  4. “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless – it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.” ~ C.S. Lewis
  5. “It always seemed strange to me that the things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, aquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first, they love the produce of the second.” ~ John Steinbeck
  6. “Vulnerability is the only authentic state. Being vulnerable means being open, for wounding, but also for pleasure. Being open to the wounds of life means also being open to the bounty and beauty. Don’t mask or deny your vulnerability: it is your greatest asset. Be vulnerable: quake and shake in your boots with it. the new goodness that is coming to you, in the form of people, situations, and things can only come to you when you are vulnerable, i.e. open.” ~ Stephen Russell
  7. “Love is not love until love’s vulnerable.” ~ Theodore Roethke
  8. “The time your game is most vulnerable is when you’re ahead, never let up.” ~ Rod Laver
  9. “The strongest love is the love that can demonstrate its fragility.” ~ Paulo Coelho
  10. “With each passage of human growth we must shed a protective structure [like a hardy crustacean]. We are left exposed and vulnerable – but also yeasty and embryonic again, capable of stretching in ways we hadn’t known before.” ~ Gail Sheehy
  11. “To share your weakness is to make yourself vulnerable; to make yourself vulnerable is to show your strength.” ~ Criss Jami
  12. “We all need somebody to talk to. It would be good if we talked… not just pitter-patter, but real talk. We shouldn’t be so afraid, because most people really like this contact; that you show you are vulnerable makes them free to be vulnerable.” ~ Liv Ullmann
  13. “Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy – the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” ~ Brene Brown
  14. “Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” ~ Helen Keller
  15. “There can be no vulnerability without risk; there can be no community without vulnerability; there can be no peace, and ultimately no life, without community.” ~ M. Scott Peck
  16. “Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.” ~ Brené Brown
  17. “In the beginning, people think vulnerability will make you weak, but it does the opposite. It shows you’re strong enough to care.” ~ Victoria Pratt
  18. “If all hearts were open and all desires known – as they would be if people showed their souls – how many gapings, sighings, clenched fists, knotted brows, broad grins, and red eyes should we see in the market-place!” ~ Thomas Hardy
  19. “People who know me know I’m strong, but I’m vulnerable.” ~ Catherine Deneuve
  20. “Don’t keep your heart safe.. be vulnerable” ~ John Mayer
