4 Fundamentals for Wholistic Life Planning

Today I am going to focus on 4 fundamental of wholistic life planning. If you read the recent post I did on Planners, Planning and Self-Management, you will know the difference between each of these. However, if you didn’t here is a quick recap so we are on the same page…

Defining Planners, Planning and Self-Management

So we are on the same page, let’s define what a planner, planning and self-management is. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a planner is –

“something (such as a device, program, or notebook) that provides a schedule and is used for planning activities, travels, etc.”

Planning is –

“the act or process of making or carrying out plans” ~ Merriam-Webster Dictionary

And self-management is –

“the act of taking responsibility for your behaviour, health and happiness, or for the organisation of your work activities” ~ Oxford Learning Dictionaries.

Is there anything you would change to the above definitions?

4 Fundamentals for Wholistic Life Planning

Now we are on the same page about these aspects, I would like to share 4 fundamentals for wholistic life planning. They are –

  • Reflect and release,
  • Identify where you are now,
  • Create your future vision,
  • Develop an action plan to focus and pay attention.

Now let’s look at each of these individually…

1. Reflect + Release

This is one of the aspects many people miss. When was the last time you looked over what you have completed for the year? Yes a really detailed review of your accomplishments, challenges, outcomes, experiences and people you are grateful for.

”Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful.” ~ Margaret J. Wheatley

2. Identify Where You Are Now

Where are you now in relation to your whole life? Most people know where they are in relation to their career or business, however what about their relationships, health, money – yes your whole life? Yes this take courage, however when we have clarity from where we are, we can start to see a little glimmer of hope for the future.

“I can compare clarity to pruning in gardening.  If you are not clear, nothing is going to happen. You have to be clear. Then you have to be confident about your vision. And after that, you just have to put a lot of work in.” ~ Diane Von Furstenberg.

3. Create Your Future Vision

What is it you want to create? What are your dreams? At the end of the year, what is is that you want to have achieved or how do you want to feel?

“The future depends on what we do in the present.” Mahatma Gandhi

4. Develop an Action Plan to Focus

Now you have created your vision of the future, what action are you going to take? An action plan is a guide to get you from where you are now to where you want to be.

“Good planning without good working is nothing.” ~ Dwight D. Eisenhower
