7 Reasons to Start Following Your Dreams Today

“One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching.” ~ Unknown

Do you have a dream, a wish, vision or a desire?

Have you ever thought what it would be like to be truly following your dreams or vision?

Many people talk about “following their dreams”, however how many people do you know who are truly doing that?

A few years ago, I had a vision to start a business. I wanted to bring my learnings of being a professional athlete, a tennis coach, a teacher, speaker, counsellor and life coach together. The business ended up being called Habits for Wellbeing (which is where you have landed).

Bringing my passions together has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life. I have learnt so much during the past few years and honestly I wouldn’t change any of the experiences. I am now doing things I would not have thought possible before starting this adventure.

Yes, I would have done a few things differently, however I started and that first step was the most important step towards following my vision. It is also the most important step for you to follow your dreams or vision. Need some reasons to start following your dreams or vision today?

7 Reasons to Start Following Your Dreams or Vision Today

1. You Are Here for a Reason –

I truly believe you are here for a reason and you have a gift offer the world. As Hayley Okines has shown, life isn’t about the length of your stay here on earth, it is about what you do with the time you do have. “Everyone has a purpose in life and a unique talent to give to others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals.” ~ Kallam Anji Reddy.

2. You Become More Courageous –

As you start taking steps towards your dream or vision, fear will arise. As you learn to meet the fear, you will develop greater courage. “There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires.” ~ Nelson Mandela.

3. You Learn, Grow and Evolve

In every struggle we are given – we can choose to contract or expand. Yes I know following your dreams can be extremely challenging, however the longer we hold on to our challenges or the more we live in the past or future – the greater our suffering. At any moment we can choose to be more responsible for our life and make different choices. If there has been challenging situations in your past, learn to be kind to yourself and continually practice self-compassion. If you need some inspiration, feel free to read the butterfly story.

4. You Increase Your Self-Worth –

By focusing on your dreams, you start to develop a better relationship with yourself and take better care of yourself and realise you are worthy of love, connection and belonging. “Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy – the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” ~ Brené Brown

5. DENIAL Does’t Work –

Occasionally, I used to think DENIAL might work, however it didn’t. I had to be honest with myself and what my dreams were, which meant to not live in DENIAL (Don’t Even Notice I Am Lying) any longer. I realised “The truth will set you free.” ~ Unknown.

6. You Can’t Give What You Don’t Have –

For example – if you are tired and run down most of the time – what do you have to give? If on the other hand you followed your dreams, took better care of yourself by nurturing yourself, eating well, taking time out, having fun and exercising – what do you think you could give then? This is articulated in the following clip by Dr Wayne Dyer –

7. The Best Time Is NOW –

Yes the best time to start the first step and follow your dreams / vision is NOW, not tomorrow. You don’t have to take a big step, just a step that you are happy with. “Have a bias toward action – let’s see something happen now. You can break that big plan into small steps and take the first step right away.” ~ Indira Ghandi
