What is Courage?

It is a noun and Google says –

  • “the ability to do something that frightens one; bravery,” and
  • “strength in the face of pain or grief.”
  • The Latin origin of cor means ‘heart’ and middle English denotes the heart, as the seat of feelings.

So looking at the definition of courage, would you agree it would be useful to have some courage in our toolkit for life?

Every Courageous Step Counts –

Sometimes life can be challenging and you can feel as though you are not getting any where. However you have to remember that every courageous step counts and if you “Take small steps every day and one day you will get there.” ~ Unknown.

What are Courageous Steps?

Courageous steps are small actions that take you outside your comfort zone. Some examples of courageous steps or actions could be –

  • apologising to someone you have hurt,
  • forgiving someone who has hurt you,
  • creating personal boundaries for yourself,
  • learning to say yes and no when you really mean it,
  • speaking up for yourself or a cause you believe in,
  • walking away from gossip or negativity, or
  • following your heart.

Remembering Your Courage..

In your heart, I know you can identify ways you have been courageous already in your life – you may have just forgotten them. I would love to see you start remembering them and begin to acknowledge your strengths.

I imagine you have gotten through some challenging times and your resilience has been tested, however it is time to give yourself credit and honour yourself for getting this far. You truly are a gift to this world and there is one thing that you can do better than anybody else, so it is time to start owning that!

11 Ways to Discover Your Courage

Following are 11 ways to discover your courage –

  1. Give Yourself Permission to Love. Yes YOU! “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” ~ Howard Thurman
  2. Keep Your Promises. Follow-through on what you say you are going to do and only promise on things that align with your values and who you are.
  3. Be 100% Responsible. Truly! Be responsible for everything that is happening in your life – if you do not like what is happening – remember you have a choice.
  4. Ask for Help. None of us can do life independently, so if you require some help and extra support, why not ask for it?
  5. Don’t Take Things Personally. As Wayne Dyer says ~ “How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours.”
  6. Be Grateful. Truly acknowledge and appreciate the different situations in your life. I have found many diamonds in my rough times over the years. What have you found?
  7. Be The Change. “Be a reflection of what you’d like to see in others! If you want love, give love, if you want honesty, give honesty, if you want respect, give respect. You get in return, what you give!” ~ Unknown
  8. Be Honest With Yourself. If you cannot be honest with yourself, then who can you be honest with?
  9. Aim for Progress Not Perfection. Let go of perfectionism and have the courage to be imperfect.
  10. Focus on What You Can ControlWe cannot control other people, so focus on what you can control – which is how you are feeling in this moment!
  11. Practice Self-Care. Yes you have needs and need looking after, so focus on them today.

I hope these ideas have helped you continue to identify ways to take courageous steps forward in your life so you can live wholeheartedly. Remember – “Have a bias toward action – let’s see something happen now. You can break that big plan into small steps and take the first step right away.” ~ Indira Ghandi
