The Gift of White Space and Rest

Oh life is an amazing journey…

Over the holiday season I have been doing a lot of reading, reflecting and relaxing – filling my days from the gift of white space and rest. However, this wasn’t what I had intended…

Just before the New Year I decided not to travel south to visit family and friends. This was a big decision for me as relationships are a priority in my life, but this time, I didn’t have the energy to drive and I honoured those feelings. I gave myself permission to enjoy white space and rest instead of pushing through like I have done in the past.

What is White Space and Rest for Me?

White Space are those spaces in my diary where nothing has been scheduled. I remember having that space as a child and it was fun – allowing life to unfold. Then somewhere along the line, things became blurred and all of a sudden busyness became a status symbol in life. Some of the activities I have been doing include –

  • Taking time out to read in the morning
  • Practicing mindfulness
  • Riding my bike
  • Having time to write in my gratitude jar
  • Learning to cook
  • Writing in my journal
  • Walking on the beach
  • Listening to music
  • Focusing on what matters most
  • Taking time out to reflect

What does White Space and Rest Feel Like for Me?

  • Expansive
  • Openness
  • Flow
  • Ease
  • Joyful
  • Acceptance
  • Enough and a sense of worthiness.

This time has reminded me to continue to create that white space and rest in my diary. Just to do nothing and allow and accept life the way it is.

Reflection Questions –

  • What does white space and rest look like for you?
  • What does white space and rest feel like for you?
  • How do you make time and cultivate relaxation and rest in your life?
