Time to Practise the Reframe?

Time to start practising the reframe? As Wayne Dyer said so eloquently –

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

What is Reframing?

The above quote pretty much sums up reframing. Reframing is a powerful strategy that we can use to to create a different way of looking at a situation, person, or relationship. When we do this, we can change or transform the meaning.

3 Ways to Practise Reframing…

There are many ways we can practice the reframe. It varies depending on our context. However, to start with we need identify and notice the thinking pattern and then reframe it. Three examples include –

1. Changing language from “I have to…” to “I get to…” –

For example: yesterday I used this in a conversation – “I have to stay home this Christmas” to “I get to be flexible now I am unable to go to Sydney and see what opens up and flows.” I am not saying I am not disappointed, I cannot see my family at the moment, I am saying I get to look at the situation differently and now and find other ways of connecting with what matters most 🙂

2. Shifting from “I should…” to “I choose to…” –

For example: instead of saying “I should exercise every day”, I am reminding myself to “choose to move in ways that nourish and feel good to my body.” This has been a big shift for me after many years of conditioning as an athlete. I am grateful that I am connected with my body and move my body in ways that are pleasurable and pain free.

3. And the final reframe…

Brother Phap Hai shares a reframe I have used – “What’s the meaning of life?” to “How can I bring meaning to this moment?” I like this reframe as it shows that we have choice in the moment (which is so important) and therefore can increase our sense of ownership and leadership over our life, so we can life a life of meaning and purpose.

Over to You…
